The challenge
A B2B SaaS company offering workflow automation tools for mid-market finance teams came to Brightside GEO with a clear problem: despite ranking on the first page of Google for several competitive keywords, they were absent from AI-generated answers. When their target buyers — finance directors researching automation tools — asked ChatGPT or Perplexity for recommendations, only competitor brands appeared in the responses.
The company's website was technically sound but content-light: service pages ran to fewer than 300 words, there were no FAQ sections, no schema markup beyond basic meta tags, and no blog. From an AI citation standpoint, there was nothing to extract.
The approach
We began with a full AI readiness audit — running 22 high-intent prompts through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews and mapping the client's starting citation frequency against three key competitors.
The audit identified four priority gaps:
- No answer-ready content. Service pages were marketing copy, not structured answers. AI engines had nothing to cite.
- No schema markup. Without Organisation and Service schema, AI crawlers couldn't definitively classify what the business did or who it served.
- No FAQ content. The fastest route to AI citation — direct Q&A format — was entirely absent.
- No topical coverage. The domain covered its core topic (workflow automation for finance) at a surface level only, giving AI systems no reason to associate it with authority on the subject.
Week 1–2: Implemented Organisation schema, Service schema, and FAQ schema across homepage and service pages. Created and deployed llms.txt file.
Week 3–4: Rewrote homepage and two core service pages with answer-ready content, direct definition statements, and full FAQ sections (five questions per page, answers 100–150 words each).
Week 5–8: Produced three foundational blog articles targeting high-intent prompts: a definition piece on workflow automation, a comparison piece (workflow automation vs manual process), and a buyer's guide. Each article included structured H2/H3 formatting, a comparison table, and a FAQ block.
Week 9–12: Monthly citation tracking, content optimisation based on which prompts were improving and which weren't, and expansion of schema to blog article pages.
The results
Increase in citation frequency across target prompts (3/22 → 13/22 in 90 days)
ChatGPT and Perplexity began citing the brand for category and comparison prompts
Google AI Overviews began surfacing the brand's FAQ content in direct answer boxes
Organic traffic from AI referrers (Perplexity, ChatGPT) inside 90 days
The most significant shift was in the type of traffic arriving. Previously, all organic visitors came via Google and were familiar with the brand or category. After the GEO work, new visitors began arriving via Perplexity and ChatGPT referrals — buyers who had asked an AI for a recommendation and followed through. Conversion rates from AI referral traffic were notably higher than average, consistent with industry data showing that AI-referred buyers arrive later in the decision process.
